SiteGround and Bluehost are 2 big names in hosting. You’ll see lot of blogs promoting them as the best hosting providers, but which one is better among these 2?
In this article we’ll compare SiteGround and Bluehost in terms of Speed, Support, Security and many other factors.
|Security||Lot of inbuilt security features||Some security features|
|Free Automatic Backups||Available in all plans||No|
|Price||Starting from $3.9/mo||Starting from $2.9/mo|
Speed Comparison – Which one is Faster?
We’ll start with Speed comparison as Website Speed is one of the major factor.
Both SiteGround and Bluehost claims fast loading speeds and 99% uptime, but keep reading to find out which one actually delivers what they claim.
For proper comparison I duplicated a same website on both SiteGround and Bluehost, check their performance report below.
SiteGround uses Google Cloud in its backend (i.e your website will be hosted on Google’s servers), this greatly increases your website’s uptime and speed. Even if there is a server failure, your website will be allocated a new server instantly thus offering nearly 100% uptime.
SiteGround also offers many other features to server your website even faster, these includes:
- Brotli Compression: It is a data compression feature, developed by Google. It can compress your website’s data to server it faster to your visitors.
- NGINX Direct Delivery: It is a feature that caches all of your website’s content and stores it in RAM, thus serving your website faster.
- Custom Php implementation: This special PHP setup has lower memory usage and allows the server to process a bigger number of queries faster.
- Supercacher: Their own caching plugin that caches your website’s content into visitor’s device, thus serving your website faster to repeat visitors.
- High Performance SSD: As SiteGround uses Google Cloud, your website is hosted on Google’s superfast SSDs.
So in terms of Speed, SiteGround is very Google Friendly. You don’t need to worry about your SEO rankings if you’re using SiteGround.
SiteGround Speed test result:
Test Server Location: Vancouver, Canada
Siteground’s speed test result was convincing, the website scored well in every metrics.
This webpage can load faster even on very slow internet connections.
Bluehost offers decent loading speeds, but if your site has a lot of visitors you’ll need to move to their VPS plans because their shared hosting is not enough for big websites.
Unlike SiteGround, Bluehost doesn’t offer a lot of features. It gives you unlimited bandwidth, standard quality SSD storage, and you can also experience bit of Downtime.
If you’re on Plus or above plans, you can expect decent performance on Bluehost.
Bluehost Speed test result:
Test Server Location: Vancouver, Canada
Bluehost’s test result was bit disappointing if compared to SiteGround.
As soon as your website starts getting more visitors, attackers will start targeting your website with Brute force, Botnets, DDoS, etc.
So choose a hosting provider that has inbuilt feature to detect and neutralize most of the threats for you.
SiteGround Security features
SiteGround has lot of features to improve your website’s security, like:
- Smart WAF: SiteGround has web application firewall to filter out most of the malicious traffic, bots, known spammers before they reach your website.
- AI anti-bot: It does what it says, blocks all the spam bots from accessing your website.
- 24/7 Monitoring: AI based monitoring system that monitors your website for any breaches, hacks, etc.
- Distributed Backups: SiteGround stores your websites data on multiple locations around the world to make sure your data is safe even the case of a server failure.
- WordPress security plugin: They have their own custom WordPress security plugin that integrates well with their hosting.
Bluehost Security features
I wish I could say that many things about Bluehost, but Bluehost doesn’t offer many security features.
The thing about Bluehost is that it just gives customer a space to host their website and leave the security and optimization part to them.
That’s why you’ll see many new Bluehost customers complaining that their website got hacked.
But Bluehost does offer a service called SiteLock which costs another 70$ / year. SiteLock gives you all the security features that you would get pre-bundled with SiteGround hosting plans.
Both SiteGround and Bluehost offer 24/7 customer support via Chat, Phone and social media. However SiteGround’s support team is more professional and knowledgeable than Bluehost.
SiteGround’s chat representatives are ready to explain your query step by step, no matter how much time it takes. That’s one thing I like about SiteGround, not many hosting providers offer this.
Bluehost also offer decent support but sometimes their agents can’t quite understand the issue and then you’ll have to start a new chat with different agent or look for answers on the web.
I’ll rate SiteGround’s customer support a solid 5/5 and Bluehost’s customer support a 3/5 maybe.
Bluehost is bit cheaper than SiteGround, but SiteGround offers more features.
Also SiteGround offers extra discounts for new customers. You can check their website for available discounts, maybe you can get SiteGround at the same price as Bluehost or maybe even cheaper.
Server Locations is not a big deal as you can easily use a CDN and serve your website globally.
Both SiteGround and Bluehost offer 6 datacenters.
SiteGround Server Locations
- Council Bluffs, IOWA (USA)
- London (UK)
- Frankfurt (DE)
- Eemshaven (NL)
- Singapore (SG)
- Sydney (AU)
Bluehost Server Locations
- Provo, Utah (USA)
- London (UK)
- Orem, Utah, USA
- Hong Kong
- Mumbai, India
Best way to know about a company is to read it’s reviews. Bluehost doesn’t have many decent reviews if compared to SiteGround.
Here are some reviews from Reddit, SiteGround has much better reveies than Bluehost.
If you have a business, then you expect it to grow right? That’s why you should choose a hosting provider that can Scale along with your business, so you don’t need to look for alternatives later.
Fortunately SiteGround is highly scalable, it can scale as much as you need it to be. It’s cloud hosting can offer upto 16 CPU Cores, 20GB Memory, 160GB SSD Space, 5TB Data Тransfer. And if you want more, you can create custom cloud plan for unlimited resources.
SiteGround also offers custom tools and Advance Support for Cloud plans.
Scalability in Bluehost:
Bluehost doesn’t offer much scalability, and it’s also not that performant. For medium traffic websites Bluehost might be Ok, but you can’t expect Bluehost to serve website with million visitors.
If you’re a developer who want to host production apps, then you might need FTP/SFTP access, Git integration, Dedicated IP, etc.
- FTP/SFTP access: Both SiteGround and Bluehost support this feature.
- Git: Only SiteGround supports Git.
- SSH: Both support SSH.
- Dedicated IP: Both provide Dedicated IP.
From the above comparison we can clearly see that SiteGround is much faster and secure than Bluehost. SiteGround also offers lot of tools to make things easier.
