Nofollow and Dofollow links. Difference?

Nofollow links were introduced by Google back in 2005. The main motive behind this was to prevent comment spam (something you may already be familiar with).

Since then, many webmasters are struggling to properly understand these 2 terms.

What are Nofollow links?

Nofollow links are just like any other normal links which can be clicked and followed by any visitor, but the only difference is that these links have “nofollow” attribute attached to them.

This is how a Nofollow link looks like (in HTML):

<a href="" rel="nofollow">Nofollow</a>

This rel=”nofollow” attribute instructs Search Engine Crawlers or bots to not follow that particular link while crawling a webpage.

As Nofollow links are not followed by Search Engines, they doesn’t give you much SEO benefits.

Why Nofollow links are used?

Nofollow links are generally used to prevent comment spamming, and also to prevent sharing of SEO benefits in some cases. They also prevent your SEO rankings from harmful or spammy links.

Is it bad to include Nofollow links on your website?

No, It is actually a good practice to use nofollow attribute on the links that looks suspicious.
You can also use nofollow attribute for sponsored or referral links. However there’s another attribute for it: rel=”sponsored”.

Many online writing platforms like Medium, Quora etc. have nofollow attribute by default on all the links appearing on them.

What are Dofollow links?

Any normal link which does not have nofollow attribute attached to it is a Dofollow link.

An example of Dofollow link (in HTML):

<a href="">Dofollow</a>

Every normal link is a Dofollow link by default, you don’t need to add rel=”dofollow” attribute to make it Dofollow.

Dofollow backlinks from trusted sources can help in boosting your website’s SEO rank and Authority.

How to spot if a link is Nofollow or Dofollow?

You can check if a link is Nofollow or Dofollow on a website by simply checking its source code. On chrome browser type view-source: before the URL. Example: view-source:

nofollow link html

This will give you the HTML structure of that webpage, where you can easily view the HTML code of that particular link and check if that link is Nofollow or Dofollow.

Some other ways to check if a link is nofollow or dofollow:

Does Dofollow links gives you more SEO benefit than Nofollow links?

There has only been assumptions about Nofollow and Dofollow links and their impact on your website rankings. According to some webmasters Nofollow and Dofollow are completely equal in SEO aspects, some say that Nofollow links doesn’t gives you SEO benefit at all.

However in my opinion Nofollow links does give you some SEO benefit but not as much as Dofollow links.

Which one is better?

You should always try to get Dofollow backlinks while Guest Posting on authority websites, but even if you’re not getting Dofollow link then don’t worry, Nofollow links will still help you in getting Potential Traffic and in building your link profile.
